As you can see, we were really roughing it, using only those amenities we could carry - from our apartment, down the hall to the elevator, and then all the way to the trunk of the car. We brought a playpen for the wee one, which was useful for keeping Sophie from running off into the woods, looking for chipmunk ba-bas.
This next sequence is from one of our trips to the beach. First, we ate, which Sophie liked - especially the strawberries. Next, we introduced Sophie to the sandy beach, which... well, she didn't like quite so much. Even though it looks like a sophisticated Photoshop job, she actually does have the same expression in each sand picture. (And honestly, she was otherwise quite a happy camper (har) on this trip!) I guess beaches aren't her thing, at least at this point in her life.
Our big expedition of the weekend was to drive north from Sechelt to Egmont and hike for an hour (with Sophie in the backpack - no, not a regular backpack) to Skookumchuck Narrows, a narrow section of ocean where the rising and falling of the tides causes some very fast currents, and great whitewater rapids.
After hiking in, we found several people in whitewater kayaks paddling into the rapids. Because the current was flowing so fast in one direction, and the rapids were crashing in the opposite direction, the paddlers were able to stay in one place, thrashing around in the froth. We stayed for a while, trying to fill up our camera's new memory card, and then we hiked back out again.
All in all, we had a great time, although our goofy little daughter wasn't feeling 100%, and sneakily managed to throw up under our thermorests in our tent during the night. Yuck. Here's a final shot of the silly girl and her birthday girl Mommy...

Ha! Those beach ones are hilarious! And good job with the new camera. I really like the one of the rapids.
