A true Kitsilano girl

This was Sophie's first try at eating sushi with chopsticks. We think she has innate chopstick skills due to being born in Kitsilano.

Banana

I handed Sophie a partially-peeled banana and the next thing I knew, she had eaten most of the banana and had carefully laid out the peel on her tray. Sophie's comment was, "I'm cutting the banana, yeah".

Fun with phrases

Sophie's getting more and more fun, in terms of her sentences. Here are a few recent ones that made us smile:

(upon Aunt Kristi offering her some cheese) "I don't need that"

(when saying goodbye to Holly, who had just run through the traditional pre-leaving verbal checklist) "Bye bye momma, bye bye Sophie, I got my cell phone, I got my jacket"

(listening to Aunt Kristi who was confused by a diaper) "What the heck, Mousie?"

(reading Little Boy Blue) "Sophie's looking at sheep"

(hand Mama a book) "Do you wanna read it?"

(Dean leaves the room)
Sophie: Dada all gone.
Mommy: Where's daddy?
Sophie: Getting pizza.
(Do we order too much pizza?)

(Dean leaves the room)
Sophie: Dada all gone.
Mommy: Where's daddy?
Sophie: Snowboarding.
(I've only been snowboarding once in my life!)

(going skating) "Sophie's wearing a BLUE helmet!"

(upon us trying to teach her the classic line from Crocodile Dundee) "That's not a knife, *this* is a fork."

Obama, Obama, Obama!

To celebrate Obama's inauguration today, we present a video of Sophie. The video was taken on November 5th, 2008, the morning after he won the election, but it's equally relevant today, when his name is on the mind of millions around the world.

Smoothie goodness

Today I was inspired to whip Sophie up a yummy berry smoothie. I used raspberries, blueberries, banana, milk, and vanilla yogurt.

Before blending:

Soph's first Freudian slip

I was just teaching Sophie how to shake hands, and I was trying to get her to say "Pleased to meet you" when she shook my hand. She was concentrating hard, and tried to say it, but it came out "Pleased to eat oatmeal", which I think is a vast improvement. It bypasses the whole politeness-for-politeness's-sake thing, and really tells the other person something about you (which is perfectly true in Sophie's case, her grandpa got her into oatmeal over the holidays, and she now wolfs down two servings and asks for more).

The next steps will be:

a) get her to stop shaking hands - she finishes with one, then demands the other hand, gives it a good shaking, then wants the first one back again, etc., etc., until you impolitely pull away from her or yell "that's quite enough hand shaking!" - and then she just grins and says "oatmeal"

b) get her to stop pulling the person close during the handshake and sneezing all over their face

After that, we're ready for the Miss Manners competitions.
