She's giving us the eyebrows!

Lately, Sophie has started "giving us the eyebrows". This consists of Sophie raising her eyebrows impossibly high while opening her mouth in a very silly grin. She seems to know just how much it makes us laugh and repeatedly says, "I want Mama to look at me and say 'What are you giving me those eyebrows?'".

Here are a couple of my attempts at capturing this amazing trick (please pardon the toast crumbs in her mouth and scrambled eggs on her face).

First chapter book

In June, we finished reading all 10 chapters of A. A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh. Sophie's attention span is getting longer and longer, and some nights she was able to listen to an entire chapter in one sitting. (Other nights, she'd start wiggling unstoppably halfway through.)

We're now on to House at Pooh Corner, and although there was much wiggling through Chapter 1, Sophie asked for Chapter 2 immediately upon finishing. Of course, this may be a bedtime delay tactic. Regardless, we look forward to many more read-aloud chapter books in the coming years - Charlotte's Web, James and the Giant Peach, Anne of Green Gables, The Hobbit... Good times ahead.

Future Librarian

Since Sophie has been a bibliophile since birth and absolutely loves the library, we thought this t-shirt would be an appropriate gift for her. The shirt came from the Seattle Public Library and you can get your own here.

Canada Day picnic at the pool

We just got back from a trip to Maple Grove Pool where we had fun in the water and ate watermelon by the side of the pool. It was a pretty darn idyllic family scene, but we didn't bring our camera, so you'll have to do with this random photo I found on Flickr.

Maple Grove Pool is a very family friendly outdoor swimming pool. It has a gentle sloping entry, a toddler slide, fun fountains, an island, and it's only 1M at its deepest point. Sophie absolutely loved leaping off the island into our arms and asked for us to do it again and again. We had fun grabbing her by her hands and feet and dragging her through the water. Sophie was generally gleeful, until the slight wind chill got to her and she started shivering. Overall, it was a much more successful outing than last year's trip, when she wasn't too keen on being in the water at all. We're looking forward to more trips to Vancouver's outdoor pools throughout this summer!
